# Ask the Assistant a question

> Where to ask the Assistant about your interviews and talent pool, and how to phrase a request so the first answer is useful

<Note>
  Access: Hub plan.
</Note>

The Assistant answers your recruiting questions from your own data: analyzed interviews, candidates, jobs, and interview notes. You write to it in everyday language. This page shows where to find it and how to phrase a request to get an answer you can use.

## Where to ask your question

<Steps>
  <Step title="From the sidebar">
    Under **AI talent tools**, click **Assistant**. A blank conversation opens.
  </Step>

  <Step title="From the dashboard">
    On the **Dashboard**, the **Ask anything about your interviews, candidates, or interview notes…** field opens the Assistant with your question already sent. The suggestions below it, such as **Summarize this week's interviews**, fill in the Assistant's field without sending it, so you can edit them before you submit.
  </Step>

  <Step title="From Sourcing">
    On a search's results, the question field at the bottom of the screen opens the Assistant in a conversation linked to the search and sends your question there. Moving from Sourcing to the Assistant through the sidebar also keeps what you had already typed in the input field.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Next to an interview">
    On an interview page, the right-hand panel offers **Brief for the hiring manager** and **Prepare the next interview**. Once interview notes are saved, **Edit the interview notes** is added. The Assistant opens in a side panel with the request already written and the interview mentioned, so all you have to do is send it. The interview stays on screen, and **Full page** switches to the full screen.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What the Assistant can answer about

It searches your analyzed interviews, your interview notes, and your other notes. If your ATS is connected, it also reaches the candidate profiles, jobs, applications, and scorecards stored there.

Without a connected ATS, it works on your analyzed interviews only. Candidate profiles, applications, and job pipelines stay out of reach.

## Phrase your request

Name the person or the job, then say what you expect. Three habits make the answer noticeably better.

* **Point to a specific interview.** Type `@` and the first letters of the name. A list appears, and the name you pick becomes a chip in your message. The at-sign icon under the field opens the same list. Its label is **Mention an interview**.
* **Attach a document.** The paperclip icon, **Attach a document**, accepts a PDF, DOC, DOCX, PNG, JPG, or WEBP file up to 10 MB. Above that, the message **The file must be under 10 MB.** appears.
* **Say the format you want.** "In three bullet points", "one paragraph, then a two-sentence opinion". The Assistant takes formatting requests literally.

Press Enter to send the message and Shift+Enter for a new line. While the answer is being written, the send button turns into a square, **Stop generating**, which stops the answer in progress. You can keep typing in the meantime. Only sending waits for the answer to finish.

## When the Assistant asks you to clarify

When a request is ambiguous, the Assistant doesn't guess. It asks its question in its answer and offers ready-made replies below it. Clicking one sends it right away.

To reply something else, type your answer in the input field. Once you've answered, the options disappear and only the question stays in the conversation.

## Examples: find a candidate in your talent pool

* "Which candidates mentioned a long notice period?"
* "Find the profiles that talked about year-end close work."
* "What was said about relocation in @Name's interview?"

The Assistant finds the passages and quotes the excerpt they come from. To rank a whole talent pool against a job, use [Sourcing](/en/sourcing/start-a-search) instead.

## Examples: prepare an interview or a debrief

* "Give me the debrief for @Name."
* "Prepare the follow-up interview with @Name."
* "Prepare a brief for the hiring manager on @Name."
* "Go into detail on their watch-outs."

You can keep going: "change the verdict to NO GO", "cut it down to ten lines". The conversation keeps the thread.

## Examples: check on a job

These requests need a connected ATS.

* "Look at this candidate's profile."
* "List my open jobs."
* "Which candidates match the Tech Lead job?"
* "Where does the pipeline for this job stand?"

## Examples: write an outreach message

* "Write a draft message for @Name."
* "Rewrite it in a warmer tone."
* "Adapt it for LinkedIn."

The draft appears in the conversation. Copy it into the tool you send messages from. The Assistant doesn't write to anyone.

## Pick up a conversation

Under the input field on the empty screen, the **Pick up where you left off** list gathers your recent conversations and Sourcing searches, most recent first. An icon tells a conversation from a search, and a click takes you to the right place. **Show more** expands it.

In the sidebar, the chevron to the right of **Assistant** expands your conversation history. Clicking **Assistant** itself starts a new one. The menu at the top of an open conversation offers **Archive**.

## Who can use the Assistant (from the Hub plan)

The Assistant is available from the Hub plan. On a Starter plan, the **Assistant** entry stays visible in the sidebar but is grayed out and inactive. Its tooltip says "Available on the Teams plan", which refers to the Hub plan.

Your role doesn't change access: every product role has it. Whatever your role, though, the Assistant only reads your own interviews, your own interview notes, and your own notes. An administrator or a manager, who sees all of the organization's interviews elsewhere in Hirify, only gets answers about their own here.

For data from your ATS, the organization's jobs are available to everyone. An administrator or a manager reaches every candidate. A member only reaches the candidates whose interviews they have scheduled in the ATS and the candidates for jobs where they're on the hiring team. See [Roles and access](/en/getting-started/roles-and-access) and [Plans and access](/en/account/plans-and-access).

## Good to know

* **The Assistant prepares, you decide.** It never sends a message to a candidate and writes nothing to your ATS.
* **It doesn't look for new profiles.** Not on the web, not on social networks. Only in your interviews and your talent pool.
* **An interview that hasn't been analyzed stays invisible.** Until an interview is processed, the Assistant has nothing to read about it.
* **Questions unrelated to recruiting are declined.** The Assistant answers in one sentence and steers you back to your recruiting.
* **The input field is capped at 200,000 characters.** A counter appears as you approach the limit.
* **Check before you act.** Every statement links back to its source. [Check an answer](/en/assistant/check-an-answer) explains how to trace it.
