# Read an Assistant answer and check its sources

> Read an Assistant answer, expand what it relies on, and trace each statement back to the interview excerpt behind it

<Note>
  Access: Hub plan.
</Note>

An Assistant answer reads from top to bottom: what it looked at, its written answer, then what that answer relies on. This page shows you how to recognize each part and trace any statement back to its source.

## Answer formats

While the Assistant works, a line shows the current step, for example **Searching your data…** or **Reading the analysis…**. Once the answer is done, that line sums up what it looked at and how long it took, for example "2 interviews found · 2 analyses read · 8s". One click expands it into the steps and what it searched for.

The written answer comes next. Depending on the request, it's followed by three kinds of items:

* **Interview passages**: the quoted excerpts, each with its speaker.
* **Documents**: the interview notes, brief, outreach draft, note, or dashboard you asked for. Each one opens in a card whose header names the document, the person or job it's about, and its actions. The chevron collapses or expands the card.
* **Sources**: below the answer, the **Sources** line has one chip per item consulted.

## Candidate analyses and profiles

When the Assistant has read an interview analysis or a candidate's profile, the **Sources** line carries a chip with their name. The chip's icon and tooltip give its type. One click expands the details below the line, one chip at a time.

| Type | What the chip expands |
| ---------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Candidate analysis** | The interview verdict, strengths, watch-outs, deal-breakers, and assessed skills |
| **ATS profile** | The candidate's record in your ATS: experience, education, applications, and scorecards |
| **Candidate timeline** | The candidate's history in your ATS: applications, interviews, scorecards, offer, hire, or rejection |
| **Deal-breakers**      | The deal-breakers found in the interview                                                             |

At the top of an analysis, a badge sums up the verdict: **Strong match**, **Likely match**, **Possible match**, **Weak match**, or **Not enough data**. Next to it, a percentage followed by a level shows the average confidence of the facts extracted from the interview. It isn't a score for the candidate.

## Tables and result lists

A search's chip expands the **Results** list: interviews, notes, profiles, jobs. Each row shows its type and title. Click a row to open it.

Interviews the Assistant found appear as chips, each leading to its interview. A comparison of several candidates shows as a table in the written answer.

## Signal cards

The **Deal-breakers** chip expands what could stop an application: an incompatible notice period, salary expectations outside the range, a missing key skill. Each signal has a title, a severity (**Critical**, **High**, **Medium**, or **Low**), and, when there is one, the exact sentence spoken in the interview.

At the bottom, **Average confidence** rates how solid the whole set is: high, moderate, or low.

If nothing was found, the details show **No deal-breakers**.

<Warning>
  A deal-breaker is an alert to check, not a verdict. Confirm it with the candidate before you act on it.
</Warning>

## Trace a statement back to its source

In the written answer, mentions of a candidate, a job, a note, or an interview appear as chips. Hover over one to open a preview showing the item's type (**Analysis**, **Transcript**, **Note**, **Candidate**, **Job**, **Application**) and enough detail to identify it.

The chips on the **Sources** line show the same preview on hover. Those with details expand them with a click, and the others lead straight to the item. **Open in the ATS** takes you to the original record in your ATS.

## Timestamped excerpts

A statement drawn from an interview carries a quote chip. Click it to open the quote card, which shows:

* the speaker, as a tag, for example the candidate or the recruiter
* the minute, in `3:24` format
* the verbatim quote, in quotation marks
* the **View in interview** link, which opens the transcript at the right spot.

When the quote couldn't be matched, the card shows **Quote unavailable.** instead. The statement stays on screen, but you know it isn't backed by a specific passage.

## When a source is removed automatically

Hirify checks every cited reference before showing you the answer. If a reference doesn't match anything actually consulted during the exchange, it is removed and a discreet banner says so below the answer: **1 candidate reference removed (not found in the tools used)**, or the plural count.

<Note>
  This banner isn't an error on your side. It signals a cleanup. A sentence without a chip is better than a chip that leads nowhere.
</Note>

## What to do if an answer doesn't convince you

<Steps>
  <Step title="Reread the sources">
    Open the quoted excerpts. A wrong answer often comes from a source read the wrong way, and the quote makes that visible right away.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Regenerate">
    The retry icon under the latest answer, **Regenerate the answer**, runs the same request again.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Rephrase">
    Specify the person, the time period, or the format you expect. The suggestions shown below the answer fill in the input field without sending it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Give your feedback">
    Under each answer, the thumbs-up, **Helpful answer**, or the thumbs-down, **Unhelpful answer**, sends your feedback to the team. You can give one rating per answer.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The copy icon, **Copy the answer**, grabs the text so you can paste it elsewhere. If a technical error occurs, a red banner appears below the conversation with **Try again**.

## Good to know

* **The candidate is never given a numeric score.** The percentages shown relate to confidence in the extracted facts, not to a person's worth.
* **The Assistant doesn't decide for you.** It gathers and cites. The call is yours.
* **An answer is only as good as its data.** Without a connected ATS, its answers lack candidate profiles and applications. An interview that hasn't been analyzed is missing too, without a word. The answer will be partial and nothing will flag it.
* **An answer writes nothing to your ATS.** Interview notes produced here stay in Hirify until you push them yourself.
* **A missing chip has no hidden equivalent.** An **ATS profile** or **Candidate timeline** chip, like a **Job pipeline** card, is missing for one of two reasons: the data wasn't found, or your ATS isn't connected.
