# Upload an audio recording

> Transcribe and analyze an interview you already recorded by uploading its audio file from the Dashboard

An interview recorded outside Hirify, on a voice recorder, a phone, or another tool, can be uploaded as is. Once the file is sent, it follows exactly the same path as the others: transcript, interview notes, and analysis.

## Upload a file

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the upload window">
    On the **Dashboard**, in the **Start an interview** row, click **Upload audio**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Describe the interview">
    Enter an **Interview title**, then set the number of **Participants**, from 1 to 5 people. This number helps Hirify separate the voices in the transcript.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose the file">
    Click the **Click or drop a file here** area, or drag the file onto it. MP3, WAV, M4A, MP4, OGG, WEBM, AAC, and FLAC files are accepted, up to 1.5 GB.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start the upload">
    Click **Upload**. A progress bar shows the progress, the speed, and the time left. Keep the window open during the upload.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What happens after the upload

Once the file is sent, Hirify checks it and then starts the transcription. Depending on the case, the window shows:

* **File uploaded**: transcription starts and the interview appears in the list within a few minutes.
* **File received**: a large file keeps processing in the background. You can close the window. The interview shows up in the list once it's ready, and the **Notifications** center tells you when its transcript is done.
* **Recording too short**: the file is under one minute long and won't be transcribed.
* **Upload failed**: the transfer didn't go through. Check your connection, then click **Try again**. The upload resumes without creating a new interview.

In the interview list, an uploaded interview has an upload icon and the label **Uploaded file**.

<Warning>
  Informing candidates is your responsibility, including for a recording made outside Hirify. Make sure the recording was announced before you upload it. See [Inform your candidates](/en/trust/inform-your-candidates).
</Warning>

## Good to know

* Closing the window during the upload cancels the transfer. The interview created when you started stays in the list as a draft, and you can delete it.
* The number of participants isn't binding. Speakers can be renamed and corrected afterward, as with the other channels. See [Identify speakers](/en/interviews/identify-speakers).
* A recording shorter than one minute isn't transcribed. The interview then shows **Too short**.
* The channel changes nothing in the transcript, the interview notes, or the analysis. An uploaded interview links to an application like any other.
